Hood 2 Hood: The Blockumentary travels from Compton, CA, to Brooklyn, NY, and visits dozens of cities in between; featuring interviews with street thugs ranging from drug dealers to hired killers, this video captures the violence and squalor of America’s urban underground with unblinking honesty. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Robin Hood - $14.99 Every time the story of Robin Hood is turned into a popular theatrical film, dozens of second-rate cinematic retellings of the legend pop up out of the woodwork. The 1985 Robin Hood is a 60-minute cartoon version, issued on videocassette to cash in on the recent video release of Disney’s 1973 Robin Hood animated feature. Essentially, the 1985 version rehashes the “original” story, the first meetings with the various Merrie Men, and the foiling of Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Been there, done that. This poorly animated Robin Hood was packaged for public consumption by Children’s Video of America Inc. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

The title track, “U Ain’t Gotta Like Me,” and the aforementioned “Welcome to tha Hood” display rapid-fire wit, fierce bravado, and a certain wisdom beyond his years, as he chronicles an alluring yet randomly violent world. The St. Louis native also reveals a knack for slurred, sinister dance-rap as evidenced on “Show Your Ass.” A potent introduction to the promising rapper, HOOD HOP is payoff for J-Kwon’s hard-lived early days. |

The Story of Robin Hood - $12.99 Better known as The Story of Robin Hood, this colorful costume adventure was the second made-in-Britain production for Hollywood’s Walt Disney. Avoiding the familiar episodes covered in previous “Robin Hood” films, this Disney effort still manages to adhere to the basic chronology. Richard Todd stars as the Earl of Huntington, who loses his title and his lands after besting the despotic Sheriff of Nottingham (Peter Finch) at an archery tournament. Reinventing himself as Robin Hood, our hero rounds up other victims of the oppression of the Sheriff and his dictatorial liege Prince John (Hubert Gregg), and thus the “Merry Men” are born. Robbing the rich to give to the poor, Robin manages to elude the villains and to prove his loyalty to John’s brother Richard the Lionhearted (Patrick Barr) by raising the money for Richard’s ransom. The Queen (Martita Hunt) is to deliver the ransom to Richard’s Austrian captors, but Prince John schemes to steal the money and place the blame on Robin Hood. Maid Marian (Joan Rice) gets wind of this plan but is locked in John’s dungeon before she can warn Robin and his men. How can virtue triumph with these odds? But triumph it does, as everyone in the audience knew it would. The success of The Story of Robin Hood inspired Disney to produce two additional British films, The Sword and the Rose and Rob Roy, the Highland Rogue. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

The Real Robin Hood - $9.99 Innumerable movies, television series, and even radio dramas have brought the fascinating legend of Robin Hood to life. But what of the historical truth behind the tales of Sherwood Forest? As produced by and originally aired on The History Channel, this documentary special asks penetrating and incisive questions about the events that cumulatively inspired the character of the rogue thief who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. The program suggests that Robin Hood originated from not one but a whole array of characters stretching back in time to the Crusades era. Ridley Scott produced this documentary in tandem with his big screen Universal Pictures opus Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett; the documentary includes extracts from the film, and interview footage featuring Crowe, Scott, and various historians. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Robin Hood of the Pecos – B&W $5.99 Robin Hood of the Pecos was set immediately after the Civil War, when most of Texas was under the thumb of corrupt northern politicians. Alleviating things somewhat is the presence of a mysterious masked night rider, inclined to rob from the rich and give to the poor. Believe it or not, this latter-day Robin Hood is not played by star Roy Rogers, but by his grizzled sidekick Gabby Hayes! No matter: the plot is resolved when Rogers swings into action against crypto-fascistic local adjutant Cy Kendall. Repeating her “Calamity Jane” characterization from Young Bill Hickok, Sally Payne plays a gun-wielding hoyden, while the more sedate heroine is enacted by Marjorie Reynolds. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Mr. Hood [LP] [PA] $16.98 Recorded at Calliope Studios, New York.K.M.D. are young…and fairly politically astute…Passionate and fired-up, K.M.D.’s political aggression is founded on black nationalism. As with peers the Jungle Bros., Queen Latifah, etc., their raps strike a strong balance between simple hectoring, reason, and flat-out parody…The recurring motif is “Mr. Hood,” a dullard who appears via samples from what seems to be some kind of instructional record, clipped straight out of the Ozzie and Harriet storybook. K.M.D. drops mini-verbal assaults and samples that offer a context wherein Mr. Hood’s “Proclamations” are rendered ludicrous…Yet for all the playfulness and urgency this disc radiates, there is still something simplistic about its rhetoric… ~ John Dougan, Option 40_91 |

Cadfael: Monk’s Hood - $14.99 Adapted for television by Russell Lewis from the novel by Ellis Peters, “Monk’s Hood” was the fourth in a series of 90-minute Cadfael mysteries. In 12th century Shrewsbury, a young man is murdered, apparently so that the killer can get his or her hands on the victim’s inheritance. Investigating the case, warrior-turned-monk Brother Cadfael (Derek Jacobi) is enmeshed in the bureaucracy of conflicting Welsh and Norman Laws. Complicating matters is the fact that the dead man was killed by one of Cadfael’s own poisonous concoctions — and, even more intriguing, the victim’s widow Aldith (Sophie Lawrence) was Cadfael’s childhood sweetheart. First broadcast in England on June 19, 1994, “Monk’s Hood” appeared in America a few months later as part of the PBS anthology Mystery. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Robin Hood – Widescreen Fullscreen $8.99 Initially conceived as a theatrical feature, but originally aired on television in the United States, Robin Hood puts slight, but effective, twists on the legendary tale. Starring Patrick Bergin in the title role, the film follows Robin and his group of bandits as they fight Prince John and save Maid Marion (Uma Thurman). This version is a little grittier than both Errol Flynn’s classic movie or the contemporary extravaganza starring Kevin Costner, since Bergin is quite down-to-earth and Thurman makes Marion into a brat, not a helpless maiden. However, these qualities and the stately photography make the film quite entertaining, and it easily equals Costner’s version, even if it can’t match Flynn’s timeless movie. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

The Adventures of Robin Hood – Special $24.99 In order to avoid the material copyrighted by Douglas Fairbanks Sr. for his 1922 Robin Hood, the scripters of this Flynn version relied on several legendary episodes that had never before been filmed, notably the battle between Robin and Little John (Alan Hale Sr., who played this part three times in his long career) and the “piggy-back” episode between Robin and Friar Tuck (Eugene Pallette). The film ties together the various ancient anecdotes with a storyline bounded by the capture in Austria of Richard the Lionheart (Ian Hunter) on one end and Richard’s triumphant return to England on the other. Robin Hood is already an outlaw at the outset of the film, while Maid Marian (Olivia de Havilland) is initially part of the enemy camp, as one of Prince John’s (Claude Rains) entourage. Marian warms up to Robin’s fight against injustice (and to Robin himself), eventually becoming a trusted ally. James Cagney was originally announced for the role of Robin Hood, just before Cagney left Warner Bros. in a salary dispute. William Keighley was the original director, but he worked too slowly to suit the tight production schedule and was replaced by Michael Curtiz (both men receive screen credit). A lengthy opening jousting sequence was shot but removed from the final print; portions of this sequence show up as stock footage in the 1957 Warners film The Story of Mankind. The chestnut-colored Palomino horse ridden by de Havilland in the Sherwood Forest scenes later gained screen stardom as Roy Rogers’ Trigger. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |
